{"id":493,"date":"2026-05-30T04:02:58","date_gmt":"2026-05-30T04:02:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sanantoniomovingreport.com\/?p=493"},"modified":"2026-05-30T04:02:58","modified_gmt":"2026-05-30T04:02:58","slug":"theyre-gonna-throw-everything-they-have-at-us-talarico-bats-down-first-paxton-attacks-at-san-antonios-paper-tiger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sanantoniomovingreport.com\/?p=493","title":{"rendered":"\u2018They\u2019re gonna throw everything they have at us\u2019: Talarico bats down first Paxton attacks at San Antonio\u2019s Paper Tiger"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Democrats\u2019 U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico\u00a0brought his general election campaign kickoff to San Antonio\u2019s on Friday evening, packing roughly 500 attendees into the Paper Tiger music venue on the St. Mary\u2019s strip.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantoniomovingreport.com\/?p=491\">Free Spurs watch parties planned for Game 7 of NBA Western Conference Finals<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Talarico has San Antonio ties \u2014 he taught sixth grade on San Antonio\u2019s West Side for several years with Teach for America before embarking on his career in the Texas House.<\/p>\n<p>But Friday\u2019s visit comes as political analysts say Talarico\u2019s path to success relies heavily on some course corrections in this part of the state.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, roughly 48,000 voters who Democrats can typically count on in Bexar County didn\u2019t come out to vote, San Antonio political strategist Kelton Morgan said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>That was part of a larger trend of voter apathy from traditionally Democratic voters that dogged the party\u2019s candidates last election cycle, Morgan said, but it was particularly prevalent among Hispanic voters and voters in South Texas.  <\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Talarico delivered a roughly 15-minute stump speech that referenced his great-grandfather\u2019s favorite Bible verse about servant leaders, recalled lessons about what makes a man from his stepfather who mowed their elderly neighbor\u2019s lawn, rehashed his Republican opponent Ken Paxton\u2018s lengthy criminal record, and promised to introduce legislation to reduce the influence of money in politics.<\/p>\n<p>All of it is aimed at bringing back disaffected voters who feel left behind by the political process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s who I\u2019m running for,\u201d he told reporters afterward. \u201cIt\u2019s all the working Texans who feel like they\u2019ve been screwed over by this corrupt system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also acknowledged the challenges he faces reenergizing voters in a county where he must run up the score in November to make up for losses in Texas\u2019 large, rural, conservative parts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no way to win Texas without winning Bexar County. It\u2019s why we\u2019re here. It\u2019s why we\u2019ve been here multiple times already in the course of this campaign,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to be showing up here in San Antonio and in Bexar County many more times. We\u2019ve got thousands of volunteers on the ground here in Bexar County, doing the organizing work, registering voters, making sure they have the knowledge and resources they need to show up and vote this November.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Friday\u2019s visit comes just three days after Texas Republicans nominated Paxton\u00a0as their U.S. Senate candidate \u2014 tossing out longtime U.S. Sen.\u00a0John Cornyn who national Republicans broke spending records trying to protect as the stronger general election candidate.<\/p>\n<p>The primary runoff was rocked by a last-minute Trump endorsement for Paxton, and Cornyn lost by 28 points.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday afternoon, the first public polling by Texas Public Opinion Research on a Talarico-Paxton matchup after the runoff had Talarico up 47-44%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is something happening in Texas,\u201d Talarico said Friday. \u201cThere\u2019s something in the air. I am confident. I feel it in my bones that we\u2019re going to win this election.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>\u2018Talafreako\u2019 fights back<\/h4>\n<p>Talarico won the Democratic nomination outright in the March primary, avoiding a runoff and allowing him to stockpile campaign cash while the Republican race raged on.<\/p>\n<p>The prolonged GOP primary has also left Republicans too preoccupied to attack the Democrat \u2014 something that changed quickly the day Paxton became the nominee.<\/p>\n<p>At Paxton\u2019s election night party, Republicans were already criticizing Talarico for past comments about transgender kids and a House floor speech suggesting \u201cGod is nonbinary.\u201c<\/p>\n<p>So far Talarico\u2019s trying to roll with the punches, selling T-shirts that said \u201cI\u2019m a Talafreako\u201d \u2014 the new nickname Paxton has given him.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantoniomovingreport.com\/?p=489\">Kindergarten-ready students do better in school. They call me a radical leftist, they call me a fake Christian, they even call me a vegan \u2014 and those are fighting words,\u201d Talarico told the crowd Friday. \u201cI\u2019m an eighth-generation Texan. I\u2019ve been eating barbecue since before Ken Paxton\u2019s first indictment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Talarico, in return, has been hitting Paxton over a criminal record, including allegations of investment fraud and bribery that led up to his own party impeaching him in 2023. <\/p>\n<p>The conservative Texas Senate would later acquit Paxton, whose legal woes have largely lifted ahead of the Senate race.<\/p>\n<p>At Friday\u2019s event, Talarico\u2019s campaign distributed fresh signs with the phrase, \u201cThe people vs. Ken Paxton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe serves himself and his donors,\u201d Talarico said. \u201cSince taking office, Ken Paxton\u2019s net worth has increased 7,000% while our pay has remained stagnant. He has 11 homes now, while most Texans can\u2019t afford one. He\u2019s taken bribes from wealthy donors, while blocking overtime pay for Texas workers and gutting our healthcare. This is the rot at the core of our broken system. It\u2019s why we can\u2019t afford anything. \u2026 It\u2019s why everything sucks right now. It\u2019s why everyone is so angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats haven\u2019t won a statewide race in more than 30 years in Texas, but those in attendance Friday were as optimistic as ever about his chances against a flawed opponent.<\/p>\n<p>Lauren Gracia, a 19-year-old San Antonian who\u2019s been studying history and economics at Fordham University in New York, said she\u2019s become a fan of the newly elected New York City mayor and is excited to vote for someone similar back home. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe feels like our [Zohran] Mamdani in Texas,\u201d said Gracia, who first heard about Talarico on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>Older Democrats in attendance were hopeful Talarico could avoid some of the mistakes that have cost his predecessors precious capital.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan Glavy, a 33-year-old who works in environmental advocacy, said he believed Talarico would bring a more measured approach that succeeds where Democrats\u2019 former standard-bearer Beto O\u2019Rourke, who was more shoot-from-the-hip, failed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a former minister \u2026 he\u2019s very real. He\u2019s very down-to-earth. And he has a moderateness about himself that I feel like is necessary in Texas,\u201d Glavy said of Talarico. \u201cI feel like he is a really safe bet in terms of pushing the envelope just enough to get to the change that we need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gina Sandoval, a 58-year-old who works in finance, said she was thrilled that Democrats chose him as their contrast to Paxton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re a split household \u2014 my husband voted for Talarico and I voted for [his Democratic primary opponent] Jasmine Crockett,\u201d she said. \u201cBut [Talarico] really is the best person because I\u2019m hearing a lot of people saying that they used to vote with the Republican Party, and that really were Cornyn supporters, and they just cannot find themselves to be supporting Paxton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The crowd at Paper Tiger was dotted with down-ballot candidates who are also counting on Talarico to run a strong campaign: Democrats\u2019 nominees for the 35th and 21st congressional districts, Johnny Garcia and Kristin Hook, to name a few.<\/p>\n<p>Councilmembers Sukh Kaur (D1), Jalen McKee-Rodriguez (D2), Phyllis Viagran (D3), Ric Galvan (D6) and Marina Aldrete Gavito (D7) were also in attendance, while state Rep. Diego Bernal (D-San Antonio), one Talarico\u2019s closest allies in the Texas House, opened for him on stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really believe that our city, San Antonio, is going to save Texas,\u201d Bernal said. \u201cBecause in this race now we have a true supervillain. \u2026 [But] James is going to win in November.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantoniomovingreport.com\/?p=487\">Will sports draw locals to downtown San Antonio?
