{"id":509,"date":"2026-06-01T19:01:25","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T19:01:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sanantoniomovingreport.com\/?p=509"},"modified":"2026-06-01T19:01:25","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T19:01:25","slug":"for-fifth-year-city-raises-pride-flag-to-recognize-lgbtq-culture-history-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sanantoniomovingreport.com\/?p=509","title":{"rendered":"For fifth year, city raises Pride flag to recognize LGBTQ+ culture, history, community"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>With cheers, honks and team spirit, an event on the steps of City Hall on Monday morning had all the hallmarks of a Spurs playoff win celebration.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantoniomovingreport.com\/?p=507\">\u2018Just show up and enjoy a meal\u2019: San Antonio children can get free breakfast, lunch this summer<\/a><\/p>\n<p>San Antonio officials and members of the community raised a rainbow flag in honor of Pride Month, the annual observance dedicated to celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) culture, history and community.<\/p>\n<p>For the month of June, the city\u2019s Pride flag will wave from a pole high above the black-and-white banner celebrating the 2026 Western Conference Champions that hangs above the doorway to city hall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat a fun weekend \u2014 first, we\u2019re all honking on Saturday, and now we\u2019re here raising the Pride flag,\u201d said Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito (D7). \u201cWe want to continue that celebration. The fight is not done yet, and I know that together we will move this forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was the fifth year San Antonio has displayed the flag atop city hall but comes amid renewed calls for recognition and justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s more than just the raise of a flag,\u201d said Michael Rendon, chairman of the city\u2019s LGBTQ+ Advisory Board, which helped organize the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe raise visibility, pride, resilience and hope,\u201d he said. \u201cThis moment is a reminder that LGBTQ+ people have always been a part of the story of San Antonio. We are your neighbors, your family, your coworkers, your faith leaders, your first responders, your artists, your educators, your advocates, and your city officials, and so much more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Pride flag represents generations of people who have fought to be seen and heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, they were seen and heard as Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones, the city\u2019s first openly gay mayor, and seven of the city\u2019s 10 council members joined local business professionals, community advocates, mothers and sons and city staff in the celebration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantoniomovingreport.com\/?p=505\">How will my water bill change? Here\u2019s how the proposed SAWS rate increase could affect customers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t take mornings like this in any way for granted,\u201d Jones said. \u201cAs somebody that grew up on the far West Side of San Antonio, raised by a single mom, served under \u2018Don\u2019t Ask, Don\u2019t Tell,\u2019 and frankly, as we\u2019re right across from San Fernando Cathedral, raised in a very Catholic household, but it was also that same Catholicism, frankly, that always showed me to lead and to treat everybody with dignity and with respect and with compassion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Councilwoman Sukh Kaur (D1) announced that she will be filing a council consideration request for support to install a memorial along North Main Avenue. The memorial would honor Erica Andrews, a former drag queen who made a name for herself in San Antonio before her death in 2013.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>North Main is the main byway of the city\u2019s Pride Cultural Heritage District, established in 2025, and where rainbow crosswalks were removed by order of Gov. Greg Abbott in early 2025.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In response, the city painted the sidewalks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the state said we\u2019re going to regulate your streetways, we said, \u2018OK, you can\u2019t regulate our sidewalks,\u2019\u201d Kaur said. Now, \u201cwe have more ideas coming, because \u2026 we cannot stand still. We\u2019ve got to continue progressing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miriam Hunt, president of the nonprofit Fiesta Youth, which serves young adults and their families, attended the flag-raising with her teenage son.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just don\u2019t want the community to be silenced or ignored or hidden,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to teach him it\u2019s OK to be proud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the event, Rendon also presented the mayor with a new banner \u2014\u00a0a Progress Pride flag that features a chevron arrow of colors placed over the classic rainbow to highlight the need for continued progression toward equity and representation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis flag represents our past generations \u2014\u00a0for the work that you\u2019ve done, we honor you today,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a reminder that we\u2019ve got to keep pushing, keep going.
