University of Texas at San Antonio officials announced the campus will resume normal operations on Friday, July 17, after closures due to heavy rain, floods and a tornado that touched down near the university’s main campus.
All classes, programs and campus activities, including summer camps, are to resume on Friday.
“Students who anticipate further disruptions to their studies or who need additional assistance, should contact Student Assistance Services to connect with appropriate resources,” officials said in updates issued throughout the day on Wednesday and Thursday.
“Faculty and staff are encouraged to consult with department leaders and supervisors regarding scheduling, staffing and other weather-related issues,” the update continues.
The tornado touched down at around 7:50 a.m. on Wednesday in northwest Bexar County. Videos quickly spread online showing its path across Loop 1604 near The Rim, and the San Antonio Fire Department responded to the Oasis Apartments, an off-campus student apartment complex near UT San Antonio’s main campus that sustained major damages.
On Wednesday morning UTSA Police Chief Stephanie Schoenborn said between 10 and 12 students living at the apartment complex were displaced. There were no updates issued on the number of students impacted as of Thursday afternoon.

“University staff are working closely with UT Police, the San Antonio Fire and Police departments, and the American Red Cross to support affected students and connect them with needed resources,” the university’s update states.
University officials said no injuries had been reported on or off campus, adding all summer camp participants on campus were safe and accounted for.
The main campus’ student union served as the university’s assistance center, where students could request in-person aid, including temporary housing assistance. But minimal operations resumed on Thursday, with only campus shuttles, the main campus dining hall and building services remaining operational with some schedule modifications.
Other resources for students and staff displaced or impacted by the floods and tornado include the UT San Antonio Emergency Fund, the Roadrunner Staff Emergency Fund, the Roadrunner Pantry, and Student Assistance Services.
